Terms & Conditions

Last updated: October 4, 2026

1. Who we are

These Terms are an agreement between you and Crytation (Pty) Ltd, a private company registered in South Africa (registration number 2023/243224/07), which runs Crytation at crytation.com. Physical address, also our address for legal notices: 57 Crawford Drive, Douglasdale, Johannesburg. Postal address: 134 Market Street, Johannesburg. Email: contactus@crytation.com. Director: Matthew Phillips. By creating an account or using Crytation, you agree to these Terms and our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, please don't use Crytation.

2. Who can use Crytation

You must be 18 or older. If you use Crytation for an organisation, you confirm that you're allowed to accept these Terms on its behalf.

3. What Crytation does

Crytation helps you search and read published health research. It searches literature and clinical trial databases, ranks studies by relevance and evidence quality, and can write AI-generated Evidence Briefs and study details. We may add, change or remove features over time. If a change materially reduces a plan you've paid for, you can cancel and receive a refund for the unused part of the period.

4. Not medical advice (please read)

  • Crytation helps you find and read research. It does not give medical advice, diagnose or treat anyone, and must not be used for emergencies or bedside decisions.
  • Evidence tiers are assigned automatically and can be wrong.
  • Evidence Briefs and study details are written by an AI model and may be inaccurate, incomplete or out of date.
  • Always check the original studies, local guidelines and your own clinical judgement. You remain responsible for the decisions you make.

5. Patient information

You must not enter information that identifies a patient, such as names, ID or hospital numbers, dates of birth or contact details, into searches, questions, notes or shared projects. If we find such information, we may delete it.

6. Your account

Keep your login details secure and don't share your account. You're responsible for what happens on it, so tell us at contactus@crytation.com if you think someone else has used it. You can download a copy of your data from Settings, and close your account at any time with 'Delete my account', which permanently deletes your data as our Privacy Policy describes.

7. Acceptable use

  • break the law or infringe anyone's rights, including copyright;
  • try to access other users' data or our systems without permission, or probe, test or bypass our security;
  • scrape, bulk-download or resell Crytation's results, or access the service with automated tools except through features we provide;
  • overload the service or try to get around usage limits;
  • upload malware or anything else harmful;
  • use Crytation to build a competing product.

We may limit, suspend or close accounts that break these rules (see section 15).

8. Plans, prices and payment

  • Free plan: core search features at no charge, with the usage limits shown in the app.
  • Pro: paid plans are not on sale yet. When they launch, we'll show the full price, currency, whether VAT is included, the billing period and the accepted payment methods before you pay. Payments will be handled by our payment processor; we don't store your card details.
  • We'll email you a receipt for each payment, which you can keep as your record of the transaction.
  • Pro includes up to 10 Evidence Briefs a day, 3 follow-up questions per Brief and 30 study-detail extractions a day. We may change these limits with 30 days' notice.
  • Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period until you cancel. For annual plans, we'll email you a reminder 40 to 80 business days before renewal.
  • You can cancel at any time in Settings. Cancelling stops the next renewal, and you keep Pro until the end of the period you've paid for.

9. Cooling-off and refunds

  • You may cancel within 7 days of first subscribing and receive a full refund, paid within 30 days.
  • After that, we don't refund part-used periods unless the law requires it, the service has materially failed, or we end or materially reduce your plan without cause, in which case we refund the unused part.
  • To ask for a refund, email contactus@crytation.com.

10. Beta testers

Accounts given Pro free of charge during the beta keep Pro at no charge until paid plans launch. We'll give you at least 30 days' notice by email before free Pro ends, and you can then choose a paid plan or move to the free plan.

11. Your content

You own the notes, folders, projects and other content you create. You allow us to store, process and back it up to run Crytation, to show it to the people you choose to share it with, and to have our service providers process it for us, as our Privacy Policy describes. People you invite to a project or folder can see it and, depending on their role, edit it. Only share content you have the right to share. If you close your account, projects and folders you share with others are handed to another member, and your name is removed from your contributions.

12. Our content and third-party content

Crytation's software, design and evidence-ranking method belong to us or our licensors. Article titles, abstracts, metadata and full texts come from third-party databases and publishers and remain theirs, so follow their licence terms when you reuse them. You may use what Crytation produces for you, such as Evidence Briefs and formatted citations, for your own study, research, teaching and clinical work.

13. Availability

We work to keep Crytation available and accurate, but we can't promise it will always be uninterrupted or error-free, and the third-party databases it relies on may be unavailable or change. This does not affect your rights under the Consumer Protection Act.

14. Limitation of liability (please read)

  • our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the fees you paid us in the 12 months before the claim;
  • we're not liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for decisions made using Crytation's content (see section 4).

Nothing in these Terms limits our liability for gross negligence or fraud, or anything else the Consumer Protection Act does not allow us to exclude.

15. Suspension and closing accounts

We may suspend or close an account that breaks these Terms or the law, or that puts other users or the service at risk. Where it's reasonable and lawful, we'll give you notice and our reasons first. If we close a paid account without cause, we'll refund the unused part of the period.

16. Changes to these Terms

We'll give you at least 30 days' notice of material changes by email or in the app, and ask you to accept the new Terms. If you don't accept them, you can stop using Crytation and, on a paid plan, cancel and receive a refund for the unused part of the period. The date at the top shows the latest version.

17. Complaints, law and disputes

Please send complaints to contactus@crytation.com; we'll reply within 10 business days. These Terms are governed by South African law, and South African courts have jurisdiction. Nothing in these Terms limits your rights under the Consumer Protection Act or the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act, and you may also approach the National Consumer Commission.

18. General

  • These Terms and our Privacy Policy are the whole agreement between you and us about Crytation.
  • If any part of these Terms can't be enforced, the rest still applies.
  • We'll send notices to the email address on your account; you can send notices to contactus@crytation.com or our physical address.
  • If a translation differs from the English version, the English version applies.
  • You can view, save or print these Terms at any time at crytation.com/terms.
